World Pet Obesity Awareness 2023 - A Conversation with Purina Clinical Veterinary Nutritionist Dr. Jason Gagné The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) and the World Pet Obesity Association (WPOA) announced World Pet Obesity Awareness Day on October 11, 2023. Up to 63% of pet cats and 59% of pet dogs are estimated to be overweight or have obesity in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. This week, we have a clinical nutrition expert to discuss a recent pet owner survey and how you can help your pet patients seeking to achieve a healthy body condition. We’re pleased to share the mic with Dr. Jason Gagné this week. Dr. Jason Gagné is Nestlé Purina North America’s Director of Veterinary Communications. He leads a fantastic team of veterinarians and veterinary product advisors who provide university engagement and sales, marketing, and educational support to the US market. Dr. Gagné was instrumental in Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets becoming APOP’s first Charter Sponsor to help their ongoing research and outreach efforts to combat pet obesity. On behalf of APOP, Dr. Ward would like to extend a warm welcome and a HUGE thank you to Purina Pro Plan! Drs. Ward and Gagné take a deep dive into a recent Purina research survey to explore dog owners’ attitudes around feeding, treats, table food, “scraps,” and obesity. Dr. Ward shares APOP’s years of similar surveys, and both vets offer practical advice for veterinary professionals to share with their clients and patients. Viewfinders, this is a fast-paced discussion on the complexities of pet obesity. We believe you’ll enjoy it - and hopefully learn a thing or two! Please visit petobesityprevention.org to sign up to participate in this year’s online surveys. We need veterinary professionals and pet parents to take our brief Pet Weight, Nutrition, and Pet Food Survey. Your opinions (and clients) help us shape future research and resource development. "In a 2023 study of more than 600 U.S. dog owners conducted by Pro Plan Veterinary Diets, from 54% to 75% agreed that they feed their dogs more food, table scraps or treats when the dogs beg, believe food is the primary source of their dogs’ happiness or feel guilty when their dogs seem hungry. This, despite 88% of respondents being concerned about their pets’ body condition and 92% believing weight loss would be beneficial." I always find the impact of the canine human bond on dog health and nutrition fascinating, calling back to my final year dissertation topic years ago! I'm looking forward to seeing future studies of probiotics and how they effect weight loss. #petfoodindustry #petobesity #petnutrition

Pets come in all shapes & sizes - but sometimes sizes get a little out of hand - not that we would ever be judgemental of course! In Australia, 41% of dogs and 32% of cats are overweight or obese. National Pet Obesity Day is a way to remind people to keep their pets healthy. Many people think fat cats and pudgy pups are cute, but consider this: - Overweight pets don’t feel good - Overweight pets need more veterinary care - Overweight pets do not live as long. Weight loss is a simple answer to all of these problems. It can decrease the stress on joints (especially important for pets with arthritis), help facilitate examination and surgical procedures, improve cardiovascular function, enhance athleticism and reduce or eliminate the need for certain medications required to manage medical disorders. In addition, it will help you spend less time and money at the vet! Here's a few tips if you think your pet could stand to shed a few pounds: - See your vet: Many pet owners are shocked to learn what an ideal body weight for a cat or dog actually looks like. A veterinarian can help you assess your pet’s weight correctly and develop a plan of action. - Measure your pet’s food. How much food do you feed your pet? A handful? A scoop? Something in between? Measuring your pet’s food allows you to keep track of exactly how much your dog or cat is eating and helps keep his or her intake consistent. - Avoid free feeding. Free feeding, or having food available at all times, can encourage overeating. To prevent this, try meal-feeding your pet instead. This means feeding at specific times of the day only and whatever food is not eaten within 30 minutes should be picked up. - Give treats sparingly. For dogs, vegetables like carrots and green beans are a great substitute for treats from a box or bag. For cats, try hiding treats around the house, encouraging the cat to “hunt” for his or her food. - Feed “human” food appropriately. For dogs, we recommend feeding cooked vegetables and protein, like steamed broccoli and chicken breast, in addition to canned food or kibble. Foods high in fat, salt and sugar should be avoided. Table scraps, such as fat trimmed off a steak, may cause severe indigestion, including vomiting and diarrhea. Keep in mind that some foods, such as onions, avocados and grapes, are toxic to pets as well. - Exercise with your pet. Physical and mental stimulation are vital in keeping your pet happy and healthy, including keeping him or her slim. Take your dog for regular walks and play with your cat for at least five minutes twice daily.

Is your puppy's tummy in trouble? Learn these quick and easy tips to manage doggy diarrhea. As a pet owner, watching your dog have frequent bouts of diarrhea can be distressing, especially if they're not eating much. Managing it isn't as difficult as you think. Don't hesitate to consult your veterinarian if you're struggling to manage it. Firstly, it's important to understand that diarrhea isn't a disease itself; Rather, it's a symptom of various underlying issues, including: - Infection caused by bacteria or virus - Parasite infestation - Sudden dietary changes or food intolerance - Poisoning - Underlying illnesses - Ingestion of foreign objects While diarrhea can often be managed at home, if it persists beyond 24-48 hours, consulting your veterinarian is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment. Here's what you can do at home to manage diarrhea: ☑️ Ensure hydration:Keep water available at all times, as hydration is crucial during diarrhea episodes. ☑️ Consider fasting: Fasting for 24 hours can help settle the gastrointestinal tract and promote recovery. However, fasting your puppy may not be suitable for puppy, unhealthy dogs, or dogs with underlying conditions. Consult your veterinarian before attempting this. ☑️ Introduce a bland diet: Offer small, frequent meals of bland, low-fat foods such as rice and boiled lean meat, or boiled potatoes. Once the diarrhea subsides, gradually reintroduce their regular diet. ☑️ Special prescription diets Your veterinarian may recommend specially formulated diets for dogs with diarrhea. Seek their advice before purchasing any. Remember to seek veterinary advice if you're uncertain or if your pet's condition worsens. I hope you find these tips helpful. Check the comment section for more. Feel free to share them, and follow me for more pet care advice. #Pethealth #petlovers #bvlc #veterinarian
